As a recruiter you provide job hunting advice all the time, but how much of that advice do you listen to?
Searching for your next role, even for seasoned recruiters, can be looked at as a chore and the fundamentals are easy to forget. Stay focussed, remember the basics and be a good candidate! But if you need a little refresher, here’s our Lush Consulting top five job hunting tips
1. Look Good Online
Once you’ve made an application, the first thing a respective employer will do is search for your social profiles; it’s time for an audit and to tidy up your social profiles. Most people keep their Facebook profiles private (the settings Facebook has introduced over the last 12 months allow you to control who you allow to see what), be aware of what you have shared and what’ visible outside of your social circles. If you don’t already have a private profile, now is the perfect time to check your settings.
Focus on LinkedIn and Twitter (if you have an account) as these are the networks any prospective employer will initially turn to. LinkedIn love to let you know what’s missing from your profile – fill in the blanks and provide the most complete profile you can. A hiring manager will want to see you have a comprehensive career history and your LinkedIn profile matches your CV (without the being carbon copies of the other). Humans are naturally curious and hiring managers will expect to see an image on your profile – your picture won’t ever be a showstopper when deciding to interview you – but do ensure that it’s suitable for LinkedIn and prospective employers i.e. no smoking or drinking and be in work attire.
If you use Twitter either keep your tweets/profile private or don’t post anything inflammatory. For example, racist, sexist, homophobic, or generally unpleasant tweets will not work in your favour when being considered for a position. Disassociate yourself from incendiary discussions and, most importantly, look like the sort of person that a reputable organisation would be happy employing.
2. Network Like a Pro
Business networking groups, university alumni associations (easily accessed through social networks and directly form your university alumni association) and networking groups specific to your industry specialism are the foundations from which the best job offers spring. Employees referred to a company are the preferred choice of hiring managers – they stay with an organisation longer, are more motivated, and contribute more to the success of a business than employees sourced using other techniques.
3. Be Interesting
What do you do outside of work? You must stand out form the crowd if you want to land your perfect role. Lead an interesting life that you can include details of as part of your application and you can elaborate on in an interview – snow boarding in your spare time implies you are an active, go-getter. Watching TV in your spare time implies you are neither. Extra curricular activities won’t substitute a substandard recruitment career, but they will make you a much more interesting prospect for potential employers.
4. Use Job Alerts
They are a job hunter’s best friend. Set the parameters for your job search and let the adverts flood your inbox. Job alerts will save a mountain of time once you’ve undertaken an initial search. Use alerts to have the latest and most relevant adverts delivered to you based on your search criteria. 5. Track Your Applications
How do you know where you are in your job search if you don’t know what you’ve applied for? It’s easy to lose track when you excitedly apply for what appears the perfect vacancy, but not keeping track could mean you losing out if you are unable to follow up the application. Whether you prefer pen and paper, Excel spreadsheets, or a note-keeping app such as Evernote, you must always know to whom you’ve applied and when. As a recruiter you know how important it it to track your applicants, as a job hunter remember it’s equally important to track your applications.
